Rabat – The Chairperson of the AU, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Government Spokesperson of the Republic of Djibouti Mahmoud Ali Youssouf congratulated Morocco on the Anniversary of its Independence Day in a statement on the AU website.
The day commemorates the ascension of King Mohammed V to the throne in 1927 and the unification of Morocco after enduring years of a colonially-ruled, fragmented country.
This year is especially significant as it is the 70th anniversary of Moroccan independence.
“This important day commemorates the historic moment, when Morocco regained its full sovereignty following a long and determined struggle for national liberation,” Ali Yousouf said. “The resilience, unity and unwavering commitment of the Moroccan people during this period remain a powerful example of Africa’s journey toward freedom, dignity and self-determination.”
He further recognized Morocco’s commitment to “continental integration and economic transformation” and the country’s overall commitments to bolstering cooperation, economy, peace, and development across the continent.
The statement added that the AU Commission “reaffirms its solidarity with the Government and people of Morocco as they celebrate this historic occasion and look ahead to an even more peaceful, prosperous, and united Africa.”
