Rabat – Morocco’s tourism sector continued its strong recovery in 2024, with new figures from the High Commission for Planning (HCP) showing a sharp rise in the Tourism Satellite Account.

The data reveals that the tourism GDP increased by 38.4% compared to 2019, before the pandemic, reaching MAD 116.2 billion ($12.5 billion) in 2024. The sector’s contribution to the national GDP also grew from 6.8% to 7.3%.

According to the HCP, domestic tourism consumption, which includes both international visitors and Moroccan tourists, reached MAD 201.7 billion ($21.80 billion) in 2024. This represents an increase of 42.6% from 2019, when it stood at MAD 141.4 billion ($15.28 billion).

The report attributed the growth mainly to the rise in spending from international tourists.

Tourism from abroad increased by 46.8%, moving MAD from MAD 93.2 billion ($10.07 billion) in 2019 to MAD 136.9 billion ($14.80 billion) in 2024.

Domestic and outbound tourism also grew, rising by 34.6% to reach MAD 64.8 billion ($7 billion) in 2024.

As a result, the share of international tourism in total consumption reached 67.9%, up from 65.9% in 2019. Meanwhile, the share of domestic and outbound tourism decreased slightly to 32.1%.

The production of the tourism sector also grew strongly. It reached MAD 181.9 billion ($19.66 billion) in 2024, compared to MAD 127.8 billion ($13.80 billion) in 2019, an increase of 42.3%. The sector’s value added rose from MAD 70.4 billion ($7.61 billion)  to MAD 96.4 billion ($10.42 billion), marking a 37% rise.

The HCP noted that taxes on tourism products increased by 46%, which also contributed to the overall rise in tourism GDP.

Overall, the latest figures confirm the importance of tourism for Morocco’s economy and show the sector’s full recovery and expansion after the COVID-19 crisis and stall in tourism.

Morocco has set new tourism benchmarks in 2024, having welcomed a record-breaking 17.4 million visitors. Tourism revenues reached MAD 112 billion ($10.42 billion) this year, a 43% increase compared to 2019.
