Rabat – Police in Marrakech arrested a 29-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon for his suspected involvement in possessing items stolen from a foreign tourist during a street theft.
According to a security source, the investigation began after a foreign woman was robbed in the old medina of Marrakech. Two individuals on a motorcycle reportedly snatched her belongings, an incident that was captured in a video widely shared on social media.
The footage shows the woman, who appeared to be elderly, standing with her bag worn across her body. As the motorcycle passed by at high speed, the two riders violently snatched the bag, pulling her forward and causing her to fall hard to the ground.
Police investigations led to the arrest of the suspect, who was found in possession of the stolen mobile phone. Further inquiries helped identify the other two people believed to be involved in the theft.
Authorities discovered that one of them is already in custody with the Royal Gendarmerie near Marrakech for a separate theft case.
The arrested suspect has been placed in police custody under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office, as investigators work to uncover all details surrounding the case.
Police are also coordinating with the Royal Gendarmerie to question the second suspect already detained, while searches continue to arrest the third suspect, whose identity has now been confirmed.
The video was shared widely online, with social media users expressing concern over the incident and the potential impact such crimes could have on tourism, especially in cities like Marrakech.
