Rabat – Head of Moroccan Government Aziz Akhannouch said on Monday that Morocco has adopted a “firm and fair” approach to the Western Sahara issue under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
In an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Razón, Akhannouch stated that the country’s strategy is based on strengthening international partnerships while placing “clear and unconditional support for Morocco’s full territorial integrity” at the center of these relations.
He described the latest United Nations Security Council resolution on Western Sahara as “just and balanced,” noting that it represents a major turning point after years of a fabricated conflict that has lasted for too long. According to him, the resolution puts all parties before their responsibilities and offers a “historic and fair opportunity” to build a more stable and prosperous regional environment in Morocco’s southern provinces.
Akhannouch added that this new momentum opens the way for a constructive dialogue with no winners or losers, a path the King also emphasized in his recent speech. He explained that more than two decades of Moroccan diplomacy, built on realism and firmness, have made Morocco “a model of credibility” on the international stage.
Akhannouch spoke about the strategic convergence between Morocco and Spain on the Western Sahara issue, saying that Madrid’s position is “clear and consistent” with UN resolutions. Spain’s support, he said, strengthens mutual trust and contributes to regional stability in Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic.
Relations between the two countries have seen significant progress in recent years. Akhannouch said this progress is driven by strong political ties between King Mohammed VI and King Felipe VI, as well as the two governments’ commitment to a long-term, transparent partnership.

Spain is currently Morocco’s top trading partner, while Morocco is Spain’s main economic partner in Africa. Nearly 800 Spanish companies operate in Morocco, and over 12,000 Moroccan companies have economic exchanges with Spain. The two countries also share deep human ties, with around one million Moroccans living in Spain.
Akhannouch noted that Morocco and Spain also work closely on migration issues, using a “balanced and responsible” approach to fight irregular migration and human trafficking networks. He said last week’s High-Level Meeting in Madrid, which resulted in the signing of 14 cooperation agreements, shows the strength of this partnership.
The latest UN Security Council resolution, adopted in October, renewed the mandate of MINURSO and called on all parties to engage seriously and without preconditions.
Adopted with 11 votes in favor and no opposition, the resolution places Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan at the center of the political process for resolving the Sahara dispute. Only three countries, including Pakistan, China, and Russia, abstained.
Over the past few years, more than 30 countries have opened consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla, signaling clear diplomatic support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Akhannouch said this shift reflects the “decisive diplomatic transformation” achieved under King Mohammed VI, noting that Morocco’s approach is now widely recognized as credible, stable, and future-oriented.
