Rabat – Morocco is making significant inroads into the German citrus market, achieving record-breaking exports of mandarins and clementines during the 2024/2025 season.Â
According to EastFruit, a platform specialized in agricultural market analysis, Morocco shipped 8,200 tonnes to Germany between October 2024 and September 2025, generating MAD 134 million ($12.1 million) in revenue.Â
This represents a 60% increase over the previous record set in 2022/2023 and marks the first time Moroccan citrus exports to Germany have surpassed the $10 million mark.
Germany has historically been a relatively minor market for Moroccan citrus. However, its share of Morocco’s total citrus exports rose from 1.3% to 1.45% this season, allowing the country to climb to the 11th largest importer.Â
The export surge was particularly strong in January, when shipments reached 1,500 tonnes, and unusually high volumes persisted between April and May, contrary to previous years when exports typically declined after March.
Spain remains the clear leader with over 76% market share on the German market, although its volumes have been declining year by year.Â
This trend has opened the door for other suppliers, including Morocco, which has now overtaken Greece and Turkey to rank fourth among mandarin and clementine suppliers. With a 2.5% share of German imports, up from 1.3% the previous season, Morocco sits behind only South Africa (11%) and Italy (4%).
The rise in Moroccan citrus exports highlights the country’s growing competitiveness and offers promising prospects for further expansion in future campaigns. Analysts expect continued growth and the opportunity for Morocco to capture additional market share in a highly competitive segment of the European citrus industry.
