Rabat – Hours separate the world from the largest tournament in Africa, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is taking place in Morocco.
The competition kicks off today with an opening ceremony scheduled to begin an hour and a half before the opener between Morocco vs Comoros.
The opening ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. Morocco time.
The opening ceremony of the 35th edition of the largest tournament on the continent will be broadcast on different channels across the world.
Moroccan channel Arryadia TNT3 will air the opening ceremony and the game. Canal+ Afcon, as well as beIN Sports Max, are expected to air the opening ceremony.
The Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat is expected to host thousands of football fans today. The stadium gates will open hours ahead of the opening ceremony, exactly at 2 p.m. Moroccan time.
The opening ceremony, according to organizers, is expected to shed light on Morocco’s rich heritage.
The ceremony will feature a world-class lineup of artists, including Jaylann, L’Artiste, and Beninese music icon Angelique Kidjo.
The opening ceremony will be followed by the much-anticipated Morocco vs Comoros game, which will kick off at 8 p.m. Moroccan time.
Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala will officiate the opening match.
“The opening match between Morocco and Comoros carries significant symbolic weight. Hosts Morocco begin their campaign in front of a packed home crowd, while Comoros look to make a statement against one of the tournament favourites,” the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said.
Morocco is expected to finish as a favorite in the opening game.
“Comoros are appearing for only the second time, having made their tournament debut at the 2021 edition in Cameroon,” CAF said, citing Morocco’s 20th AFCON finals appearance and their fifth in a row.
