Mohammedia – More than 14,000 families in Morocco’s Fez-Meknes region are receiving emergency winter assistance under the “Grand Froid” operation led by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, as part of a nationwide effort to support communities hit by extreme cold and snowfall.
According to official figures, 14,337 families across the region have benefited from the operation so far.
The first distributions were launched from the rural douars of Imzougen, Tafert, and El Ghar, in the commune of Ighzaren in Sefrou province, where 290 aid packages containing basic food items and blankets were delivered to vulnerable households.
In Sefrou alone, around 2,340 families across four communes are included in this phase, with additional douars set to be covered in the coming days.
The operation is designed to respond quickly to harsh winter conditions affecting remote and mountainous areas.
Distribution on the ground is supervised by teams from the Foundation, with logistical and human support provided by the General Directorate of Social Services of the Royal Armed Forces, in coordination with local authorities.
This setup is intended to ensure aid reaches isolated douars that are often difficult to access during periods of snow and freezing temperatures.
The Fez-Meknes effort comes as part of a broader national rollout that began earlier this week. Initial interventions were launched in several provinces, including Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Taroudant, Azilal, and Khenifra, where thousands of households have already received assistance.
The Foundation plans to gradually expand coverage to other cold-affected provinces such as Tinghir, Midelt, Ouarzazate, Chefchaouen, and Guercif.
At the national level, nearly 30,000 families from more than 670 douars have benefited from the “Grand Froid” operation to date, according to data communicated by the Foundation.
Ultimately, the program targets 73,000 households across 28 provinces that experience severe drops in temperature and heavy rain or snowfall during winter.
Beyond the figures, beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its importance in easing daily hardship during extreme weather.
