Marrakech – The Nigeria Super Eagles take on Uganda today in their last match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group Stage.

Nigeria, winners of their first two matches — 2-1 against Tanzania and 3-2 against Tunisia — have already punched their ticket for the Round of 16.
Uganda, on the other hand, sit last in Group C with only one point after two matches. The Cranes lost their opener 3-0 to Tunisia before scraping a 1-1 draw against Botswana.
Today will mark only the second AFCON meeting between the two sides. Uganda previously edged out Nigeria 2-1 in 1978, en route to a final appearance.

The Cranes are currently on a five-game winless streak at AFCON, with two draws and three losses, with their last victory in the tournament being in their 2019 tournament opener against DR Congo.
There is only one scenario where Uganda can progress to the next round, and that is with a win tonight: an unlikely scenario against a dominant Nigerian squad, but still a possibility nonetheless, according to Belgian manager Paul Put.
“We know we are facing a very good team, a finalist in the last edition. They’ve also performed very well,” Put explained. “If we want to make a change, we have to get a good result. I hope the players, because we have no other solution, will give their best. It’s going to be hard, difficult, but in football everything is possible.”
The Cranes previously advanced to the AFCON knockout rounds twice in their history. First, in 1978, Uganda made it all the way to the tournament final. Then, in 2019, the Ugandans made their return to the knockout stages but were eliminated in the Round of 16.
Nigeria Team News
The Super Eagles have soared high to start off their 2025 AFCON campaign. Eric Chelle’s side are one of only three teams to win their opening two matches, alongside Egypt and Algeria, guaranteeing a 16th successive knockout round appearance.
With five goals in two matches, the Super Eagles’ attack has been prolific. At the heart of it, Atalanta star Ademola Lookman has been in blazing form. The 2024 African Ballon d’Or winner has been decisive in Nigeria’s two wins.
Lookman delivered the match-winning goal against Tanzania in Nigeria’s opening match. Then, against Tunisia, the Atalanta star was directly involved in each of Nigeria’s three goals. Lookman currently leads all AFCON players in goals and assists, with four.
Other senior figures of the Super Eagles have also found their stride early in the tournament. Star striker Victor Osimhen opened his scoring counter against Tunisia, while midfield pair Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi continue to impress.
With the Group C first place, Eric Chelle is expected to rotate and rest some of his star players today, as he hinted during his pre-match press conference.
“This is not a competition for 11 starters or 11 players. Everybody deserves to have a chance because, sometimes, the guy who’ll only play five minutes in the tournament can bring the victory,” Chelle explained.
