Rabat – The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has placed into service a new very high-voltage power line linking Sidi Bennour to Laawamer, marking a fresh step in the ongoing reinforcement of Morocco’s national electricity transmission network.
The 400 kilovolt double-circuit line was energized on Sunday following the completion of works along its 98-kilometer route.
The infrastructure is designed to strengthen the backbone of the country’s power grid by increasing electricity transfer capacity between regions and improving overall system reliability.
According to the public utility, the project forms part of its broader investment program aimed at securing and modernizing the national transmission network.
The new line is expected to contribute to a more stable flow of electricity across the grid, supporting growing demand and ensuring consistent service quality.
The construction of the line required the deployment of significant technical and human resources.
The total investment exceeded MAD 184 million ($20.24 million), reflecting the scale and complexity of the works involved in installing very high-voltage infrastructure across a long corridor.
ONEE stated that the commissioning of the Sidi Bennour–Laawamer line continues the steady development of the national electricity transport system.
The project aligns with efforts to upgrade grid performance and adapt it to evolving energy needs, particularly as the country advances its energy transition agenda.
This initiative follows a series of major transmission projects undertaken by the ONEE in recent years to strengthen the national grid, including the expansion of very high-voltage corridors toward the southern regions.
Morocco’s electricity transmission network currently exceeds 30,000 kilometers of very high-voltage lines in operation, notably a 400 kV double-circuit line reaching Dakhla, alongside another 400 kV double-circuit line under construction and scheduled for commissioning by mid-2026.
These projects are designed to increase transfer capacity and support the evacuation of additional renewable electricity, particularly from wind parks under development in the south.
