Rabat—VfB Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has shared that he hopes Moroccan midfielder Bilal El Khannouss goes all the way at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking to the media, Hoeneß confirmed that he has stayed in close contact with El Khannouss during the tournament and expressed his desire to see the Stuttgart player return as a continental champion. “We are in constant contact (with El Khannouss). I congratulated him, and I hope he returns soon carrying the trophy,” Hoeneß said.
El Khannouss is part of Morocco’s AFCON squad and is currently competing on home soil as Morocco hosts the tournament.
While Stuttgart could be without the midfielder for additional Bundesliga matches if Morocco continue their run, Hoeneß believes the experience outweighs the short-term absence. “It rarely happens in a footballer’s career to play in a major tournament in their home country. I hope he experiences many positive moments that give him a strong boost for the rest of the season,” he added.
Morocco are preparing for a quarter-final clash against Cameroon on Friday at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. A deep run in the tournament could see El Khannouss miss up to three more matches for Stuttgart, but the club’s coach remains fully supportive of his player’s international ambitions.
