Rabat – Morocco is expected to face unstable weather conditions starting Wednesday, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
The weather authority has issued an orange-level weather alert, warning of snowfall, thunderstorms, and colder temperatures in several regions across the country.
The DGM said that snowfall is expected on mountain areas above 1,700 meters, with snow depth ranging between 10 and 20 centimeters. The affected provinces include Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Azilal, Ouarzazate, Taroudant, and Midelt. These conditions are forecast from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
At the same time, thunderstorms with rainfall amounts between 20 and 30 millimeters are expected in several northern and coastal areas. These include Rabat, Sale, Kenitra, Khemisset, Tangier-Asilah, Tetouan, Larache, M’diq-Fnideq, and Fahs-Anjra. Thunderstorms may occur between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to the DGM, Morocco will experience a full week of weather disturbances, marked by repeated rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. These conditions are linked to active low-pressure systems combined with cold air in the upper atmosphere and moist air coming from the Atlantic Ocean.
Temperatures will be relatively cold on Wednesday, especially in the Atlas Mountains, the Rif, the southeast, and inland plateaus. Snow will fall over the High and Middle Atlas, while rain and thunderstorms may affect Tangier, the Rif, the Loukkos region, the Gharb, and northern and central plains. Strong winds may also blow in southern regions, sometimes carrying dust.
The unstable weather is expected to continue on Thursday and Friday, with more rain, isolated thunderstorms, and additional snowfall on mountain peaks. Temperatures may slightly rise in the south by Friday, while remaining cool elsewhere.
From Saturday into early next week, forecasts point to continued cold and unsettled weather, with rain in northern areas and repeated snowfall in the Atlas, the Rif, and eastern regions.
The DGM urges citizens to remain cautious, especially during strong thunderstorms and snowfall.
