Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), following Cameroon’s 2-0 loss to Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final last week.
According to CAF, their Disciplinary board found Eto’o guilty of misconduct and “violating the principles of sportsmanship” outlined in CAF’s rules following the game.
As a result, he has been banned from attending the next four official CAF matches in the ongoing AFCON and fined $20,000. CAF said it will make no further comment on the matter.
In response, FECAFOOT released a statement saying that CAF’s decision “lacks any explicit justification.” The federation added that “the rapid procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process.
Eto’o will be pursuing an appeal against CAF’s decision, the statement concluded.
The former footballer was visibly frustrated by several refereeing decisions during the Morocco-Cameroon game. He turned toward Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa and CAF president Patrice Motsepe while expressing his anger.
He also vigorously protested some of the referee’s calls from the stands and was spotted gesturing angrily at officials.
The sanctions against Eto’o come amid wider debate and accusations on social media and in some fan circles that Morocco has received favorable refereeing decisions as hosts of AFCON 2025.
Some commentators and fans claimed that Morocco benefited from controversial calls in matches, including the semifinal against Nigeria, which ended 0-0 after extra time and was decided in Morocco’s favor in a penalty shootout.
In response, Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui has refused to entertain the suggestions of referee bias and instead focuses on the upcoming final against Senegal on Sunday.
