Rabat – Morocco is expected to be one of the main countries contributing troops to an international stabilization force in Gaza, as the United States announced the launch of “phase two” of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, Axios reported
“U.S. officials say that Indonesia and Morocco are expected to be the main troop contributing countries at this stage,” the American outlet said.
The new phase aims to move from a fragile truce toward long-term governance, security, and reconstruction in the war-torn enclave.
The White House said on Wednesday that phase two includes the creation of a new Palestinian technocratic government in Gaza. The administration says the move is intended to prevent the ceasefire from collapsing and to stop the situation from sliding back into full-scale war.
Despite the ceasefire announced in October, Palestinian suffering is far from over, and the situation on the ground remains fragile. Since the truce began, Israel has carried out numerous violations, including airstrikes that have killed hundreds of Palestinians.
In addition, Palestinians continue to suffer due to restrictions on aid, lack of shelter, and the destruction left by months of war. Dozens of civilians, mainly children, died from malnutrition and hypothermia as Palestinians suffer through the harsh winter in makeshift camps.
US officials say phase two of the agreement involves Hamas giving up its weapons, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) pulling back from Gaza, and new governing and security systems taking effect.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has improved slightly in recent weeks. The United Nations announced last week that basic food needs are now being met for the first time since 2023. “For the first time since 2023, humanitarian assistance will provide Gazans with enough food to fulfil minimum nutritional needs,” the UN said.
However, aid organizations say shelter remains the biggest challenge. Israel continues to block the entry of large tents, arguing that their metal parts could be used for weapons.
Nearly the entire population of Gaza was displaced during the genocide, and hundreds of thousands of people are still living in makeshift tents. Rebuilding is expected to begin during phase two, but reconstruction is expected to take many years.
