Marrakech – Rising from the memory of the 1960 earthquake, the Medina of Agadir is a tribute to Morocco’s rich artisanal heritage and the vision of Beato Salvatore, known as Coco Polizzi.
Inspired by traditional building techniques and regional materials, Polizzi launched this ambitious project in 1992, creating what has been described as a “miniature medina” that pays homage to centuries of craftsmanship.
White stone from Agadir, red stone from Argana, green slate from Anzi, ochre earth from Taliouine, and locally sourced woods like eucalyptus and laurel come together to form a tapestry of color, texture, and tradition.
The Medina’s architecture is more than aesthetic; it is a carefully curated showcase of centuries-old techniques and artisanal skill.
Walking through its labyrinth of narrow streets and sweeping arcades, visitors encounter the unmistakable mark of the region’s master artisans, the Maâlems.
Under Polizzi’s artistic and technical direction, every feature, from carved wooden Amazigh doors and wrought-iron scrolls to intricate mashrabiya panels, engraved stone, Roman-inspired mosaics, colorful stained glass, and traditional Amazigh mosaic carpets, speaks to a dedication to craft that is as immersive as it is inspiring.
