Rabat – Morocco has added new clarity to its electricity sector after the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) approved and released the national grid’s hosting capacity for the 2026-2030 period.
The decision followed a meeting of ANRE’s council on January 28 in Rabat and aligns with Morocco’s strategy for faster progress in the energy transition, alongside the legal framework that governs the sector.
The authority set the hosting capacity of the national electricity system at 10,429 megawatts.
This level exceeds previous projections by a wide margin. Compared to the 2025-2029 period, the grid now offers an additional 1,091 megawatts. The gap grows to 3,193 megawatts when measured against the 2024-2028 period.
These figures correspond to increases of around 12% and 44%, which confirm a steady expansion of the system’s technical margins.

The decision also signals a shift in how the electricity market positions itself for future investment. Stronger grid capacity strengthens confidence among operators and investors, particularly in renewable energy, who often face uncertainty at the connection stage.
By clarifying what the system can absorb, the regulator provides a more stable foundation for medium-term planning.
ANRE based this assessment on a structured process that involved all network managers concerned. This coordinated effort led to a detailed evaluation of the real capacities of both transmission and distribution networks.
The publication of hosting capacity responds to legal requirements on transparency and predictability to guide decisions by public institutions, private operators, and project developers alike.
To ensure broad access to this information, the authority introduced a dedicated digital platform available through its official website. The tool targets stakeholders across the electricity sector and offers particular value for renewable energy project holders who rely on precise technical data before committing to investments.
With this move, ANRE has confirmed its role in supporting Morocco’s energy policy while seeking balanced investment planning and protection of grid reliability.
The project received financial support from the African Development Bank and German Cooperation, which reflects sustained international backing for Morocco’s long-term energy ambitions.
