Rabat-Walid Regragui has reportedly expressed his desire to resign as head coach of the Moroccan national team, according to French outlet RMC Sport.
The 50-year-old, who guided Morocco to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and last month’s AFCON final, is said to be exhausted after a demanding tournament.
Regragui reportedly has links with clubs in Saudi Arabia, though the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has not yet made a decision regarding his future. Some within the federation are apparently hoping he remains in charge, leaving the situation unresolved for the time being.
The talk of his departure comes just three weeks after Morocco’s heartbreaking AFCON final result. It was tough for fans and a team that felt so close to the trophy. Since taking over in the summer of 2022, Regragui has been a transformational figure for the Atlas Lions, most notably leading them to that historic World Cup semi-final, a run that changed everything for Moroccan football.
Should the FRMF accept his resignation, Regragui could move quickly to the Saudi Pro League, where several clubs are reportedly interested in securing his services. At club level, he has previously coached FUS Rabat and Wydad AC in Morocco, as well as Al-Duhail in Qatar.
For now, talks are still happening behind closed doors, and a final word from the FRMF is expected any day now. It’s left the team’s leadership in a state of limbo, right as everyone starts looking toward the 2026 World Cup, which is only 4 months away.
