Rabat – Regional education authorities in northern Morocco have decided to continue suspending classes in several areas due to expected bad weather conditions.

The regional directorates of the Ministry of National Education in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region announced that public and private schools will remain closed in a number of provinces as a safety measure.

Classes are suspended in the provinces of Ouezzane and Fahs-Anjra on Monday, while schools in Chefchaouen and Tetouan will remain closed for both Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in Larache province, the regional education directorate decided to suspend in-person classes starting Monday and shift to distance learning for all schools located in the municipality of Ksar El Kebir.

The small city has suffered the brunt of floods, with several neighbourhoods submerged in water. This has prompted authorities to evacuate residents to nearby cities and shelters.

The directorate said the decision will remain in effect until weather conditions improve and official instructions are issued by the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, in Al Hoceima, authorities announced a partial return to in-person classes. Schools will reopen in several municipalities, including Al Hoceima, Ajdir, Imzouren, Beni Bouayach, Ait Youssef Ou Ali, Rouadi, Beni Hadifa, Beni Boufrah, and others. However, classes will remain suspended on Monday in schools located in the rest of the province’s municipalities.

Education authorities said these decisions were taken due to ongoing weather disturbances affecting northern Morocco. The measures follow a weather alert issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology and are in line with recommendations from provincial monitoring committees, in coordination with local authorities, they added.

Several regions across Morocco, particularly the north, witnessed unusually heavy rain in recent weeks, raising dam levels and causing flash floods.

At least four people died while one remains missing after their car was swept away by floods through the Lamouawja village in Bni Harchen, Jbel Lahbib, on Saturday.
