Rabat – Bilal El Khannous’s form has dipped since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 (AFCON), where he played a key role for Morocco and helped guide his team to the final.
The disappointment of losing that final has carried over into his club performances, with fatigue and loss of rhythm affecting his impact in Germany.
During Stuttgart’s 2-1 defeat to St. Pauli, El Khannous was substituted at halftime after a poor showing. Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß explained his decision at the press conference: “I was not satisfied with his performance. We felt we needed to bring in new energy, and that was the reason for the change.”
Hoeneß added that he did not feel the need to explain the substitution immediately: “I didn’t explain it to him, and it wasn’t necessary. We will discuss it calmly later.”
Before AFCON, El Khannous had impressed earlier in the season, establishing himself as a regular starter. In 25 official matches, he scored six goals and provided four assists, showing maturity and creativity in midfield.
The 21-year-old’s strong first half of the campaign raised expectations, but his recent struggles have raised questions about his consistency.
The dip in form has also fueled speculation about his future. Reports in England have linked him with a possible move to the Premier League, with Newcastle United reportedly interested.
For now, he remains at Stuttgart on loan from Leicester City, but his performances in the coming weeks could determine whether he secures a permanent move or returns to England.
