Rabat – At the Arab League meeting today, Morocco reaffirmed its position in support of Gulf countries affected by Iranian attacks.
Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, is representing Morocco remotely during the extraordinary session of the Arab League, convening Arab representatives to discuss Iranian attacks on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states.
During the meeting taking place in Cairo, Bourita stressed Morocco’s support for its brotherly countries, recalling King Mohammed VI’s recent remarks during phone calls with the leaders of several Gulf states.
“What harms you harms us, and what affects us affects you,” Bourita said.
He said King Mohammed VI’s position conveyed during his phone calls with Arab leaders demonstrates Morocco’s commitment to the security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of these countries.
On February 28, King Mohammed VI conveyed Morocco’s support to Gulf leaders, condemning Iranian attacks targeting the security of their territories.
The monarch also expressed Morocco’s full support of these countries and backed any legitimate measures they deem appropriate to safeguard their security and the safety of their citizens.
The King stressed that the security and stability of the Arab Gulf states are an integral part of Morocco’s own security and stability. He added that any harm to their security constitutes a “serious and unacceptable aggression” and a “direct threat to regional stability.”
Bourita recalled Morocco’s position on Iranian attacks as “a clear violation of their sovereignty and a direct threat to the regional security.”
He said such attacks reflect the “aggressive policies consistently pursued by the Iranian regime against neighboring countries and the region at large, seeking to sow discord and destabilize through the creation of terrorist entities and militias loyal to it at the expense of their countries’ security and stability.”
Morocco cut ties with Iran in 2018, after it received evidence about a collusion between the Polisario Front and Iran’s proxy Hezbollah.
Rabat went on to accuse Tehran of providing the Polisario, a separatist group challenging Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara, with military and logistical support.
During the meeting, the Arab League strongly condemned the Iranian attack targeting facilities in the Gulf region.
Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Iran is engaging in aggression that targets civilian objectives and vital infrastructure.
He warned that such actions are leading the region into a highly dangerous phase of escalation.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran, triggering a retaliation campaign from Tehran.
Since then, Iran has been targeting US and Israeli assets on Gulf countries, sparking condemnation and concerns over the escalating situation.
Israeli-American attacks have killed over 1,300 people to date in Iran. Israel also continues to attack Lebanon, killing more than 300 people.
