Rabat – Morocco is among the countries that have reinforced their positions in Africa with consumer goods exports.
A report from African Exponent, whose data is now making international and local headlines, shows Morocco as number one in terms of consumer goods exports.
The report cited Morocco’s leadership in several sectors, including the automotive sector, textiles and food processing.
“The automotive sector alone has become a major export engine, supported by large-scale industrial zones like Tanger Automotive City, which hosts global manufacturers and suppliers,” the report said.
Morocco’s automotive sector is booming and the triumph is documented in numbers. One of the latest reports from the Exchange office said auto exports reached MAD 12.24 billion in January.
The number represents a 19.1% increase compared to the same period last year, with the report attributing the developments to the manufacturing sector and exports.
In its January report, the African Exponent also cited textiles as among top performer sectors in Morocco.
“Morocco’s textile and apparel industry remains highly competitive, serving European fashion brands through fast turnaround times and reliable quality,” the report shows.
SwitchMed, an initiative funded by the EU, has identified Morocco’s textile industry as a vital job creator.
The initiative, which aims to achieve a circular economy in the southern Mediterranean, said the sector accounts for over 20% of Morocco’s total export.
“The textile and garment sector plays an important role in Morocco’s development,” the same source said, noting that most of the one billion pieces of textile produced annually in Morocco go to the European market. The African Exponent also cited other exported goods such as processed food and packaged goods.
“Morocco’s trade agreements with Europe and other global markets, combined with its geographic advantage as a gateway between Africa and Europe, make it one of the most strategically positioned countries for consumer goods export,” the report said.
The report highlights nine highly performing countries in terms of consumer goods manufacturing and exports, including South Africa, which comes second and is leading the continent.
Nigeria is third; with consumer goods from processed foods to various packaged products.
Cote d’Ivoire ranks fourth, followed by Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, and Tunisia.
