Agadir – The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) has announced Friday, March 20 as the date of Eid Al Fitr for this year 1447 AH (2026), marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims in Australia.
An official statement by the ANIC confirmed the date in an official statement on its website, explaining that March 20 marks the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal 1447 AH, which corresponds to the end of the month of Ramadan.
The announcement comes following consultations carried out by the Australian Fatwa Council, which operates under the Australian National Imams Council and specializes in issuing fatwas regarding a wide range of faith-related issues, including the Islamic calendar.
The determination of the Eid day is based on a combination of astronomical calculations and moon sighting methods. This ensures consistency and reliability in fixing significant Islamic dates for the Muslim community living in Australia.
According to the ANIC announcement, the method takes into account the “calculated birth of the moon before sunset, the duration of the moonset after sunset, and the possibility of sighting the moon in Australia and its surrounding region.”
The council also stressed the need for maintaining community cohesion and recognizing varying views in relation to the sighting of the moon.
Eid Al Fitr is a significant religious event that marks the end of Ramadan, a month in which Muslims across the world observe fasting and prayer.
Beyond the commitment of fasting, Ramadan is also a spiritual time when Muslims reflect on their actions and seek forgiveness from God (Allah) for their wrongdoings throughout the previous year.
