Casablanca – The 2026 World Airport Awards, which Skytrax hosted in London on March 18, has named Marrakech-Menara airport as Africa’s best regional airport for the past year.

It’s the first time the airport has taken the title, placing it firmly on the radar of frequent flyers and industry observers alike.

Skytrax bases its ranking on a global passenger satisfaction survey covering more than 565 airports and travelers from over 100 nationalities.

A push toward expansion, modernization, and digitization

This year’s survey points to clear gains in operational efficiency and service quality for Marrakech-Menara, with passengers reporting smoother transit, reduced waiting times, and improved staff assistance across key touchpoints.

Recent developments at Marrakech-Menara are part of a broader national investment program launched in 2025, which includes major terminal expansion works, upgraded access infrastructure, and capacity increases aimed at handling growing passenger traffic.

There’s been a push toward digitization too, with improved check-in systems and better coordination between security, customs, and ground services. Even signage and passenger flow have been reworked to reduce bottlenecks.

The award also reflects a broader shift across Morocco’s airport network. The Moroccan Airports Authority, ONDA, has been pushing its “Airports 2030” strategy, aiming to modernize infrastructure while turning airports into more than transit points.

ONDA’s new “Let’s Take Off” campaign leans into that idea, presenting airports as part of the travel experience rather than just the beginning of it.

The improvements are the result of closer coordination between security services, customs, local authorities, and government departments in charge of transport and interior affairs.

For Marrakech, a city that lives off movement and tourism, the airport’s growing reputation matters.
