Rabat—Newly called-up midfielder Samir El Mourabet has described his first inclusion in the Morocco national football team as the realization of a lifelong dream.

The 23-year-old was named in Ouahbi’s squad for the March 2026 international window, which features friendly fixtures against Ecuador and Paraguay. The matches form part of Morocco’s ongoing preparations to build toward another World Cup campaign after their historic run in Qatar.

Speaking to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, El Mourabit revealed the emotional moment he learned of his selection. “We watched the coach’s press conference. I was at the hotel, we had a match that same evening, and I listened,” he recalled. “When my name was mentioned, I was really happy. I felt there was recognition, and I was very proud to be selected for this gathering.”

The call-up is a huge step in the midfielder’s career, proving his club performances.

El Mourabet also spoke about the importance of the moment for his family, particularly his father, who shared in his pride. “He was very happy for me and proud. It’s a feeling of pride for the whole family because I can represent my country. They told me to enjoy it and give everything for the nation.”

With Morocco already focused on long-term planning for 2026, competition for places remains intense.

The midfielder is fully aware that his journey is only beginning. “This was part of my dreams, and I have achieved it. Now I must continue. I must work to stay. The next goal is the World Cup. We will try to be part of this team, offer everything we can, and go as far as possible in the competition.”

He also took the time to acknowledge the overwhelming support from Moroccan fans, a key factor behind the team’s recent successes. “I want to thank the fans. I’ve received many messages and a lot of encouragement. We feel that there is a great nation behind us, and that is a beautiful feeling.”

Morocco will continue its preparations through two friendlies this March, and El Mourabet’s integration into the squad will be closely watched.
