Rabat – Police intercepted an attempt at international drug trafficking on Tuesday afternoon, seizing 11 tonnes and 755 kilograms of cannabis near the coastal city of Essaouira.

The operation took place in collaboration with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), which provided precise information to the police division in Essaouira on the drug trafficking attempt.

A statement from the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) said the operation is also in coordination with the local authority and the royal gendarmerie.

Police seized the drugs packed on three commercial vehicles with forged license plates.

The drivers abandoned three vehicles following a security chase in a rural area outside the city.

In the search operation, police seized the drugs and 10 forged vehicle license plates.

A parallel intervention was conducted in the rural area of Sidi Kaouki, where Gendarmerie officers seized another vehicle suspected of being linked to the same international drug trafficking network.

Authorities say field investigations continue to identify all possible individuals linked in order to arrest them.

Morocco has made continuous efforts for many successful drug seizures.

Only last week, police confiscated a total of 3.9 tonnes of cannabis at Tanger Med Port.

In 2025, security services seized approximately 170 tonnes and 768 kilograms of cannabis and its derivatives.

During the same year, police also seized more than 1.7 tonnes of cocaine and 5.9 kilograms of heroin.

Police handled 106,117 cases last year, arresting 134,126 individuals – including 378 foreigners.
