Rabat – Marseille coach Habib Baye has given an update on Nayef Aguerd ’s condition ahead of the team’s important game against Monaco, as both sides push for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match, Baye admitted the team’s recent performances have not met expectations. Still, he noted that he remains focused on securing a top-four finish.

“Our form is still not satisfactory,” Baye said, while stressing that the objective remains unchanged.

Marseille will head into the game without several key players. Geoffrey Kondogbia will miss the match due to a thigh injury, and Mason Greenwood is still recovering, leaving the squad short of options.

However, Baye shared positive news regarding Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd. The defender returned to training last Friday after a spell on the sidelines and has started his journey back to full fitness.

Aguerd will not return to the starting lineup immediately, but the coaching staff plans to reintroduce him gradually.

Recovery after surgery

Aguerd had been dealing with a sports hernia, a common issue among professional players due to repeated physical strain. The problem required surgery, which he underwent in March.

Since then, he has followed a rehabilitation program and made steady progress. His return to training marks an important step as Marseille look to strengthen their defensive line.

Baye also confirmed that Leonardo Balerdi is close to returning to full group training, which could further improve the team’s defensive options in the coming weeks.

The match against Monaco is important for both teams. Marseille currently sit fourth in the table with 49 points, holding a small advantage over Monaco, who are just a few points behind.

A win would allow Marseille to strengthen their position in the race for Champions League qualification, while Monaco will look to close the gap.

For Marseille, the return of players like Aguerd could prove crucial during this final stretch of the season. Even if he does not play a full role immediately, his presence adds depth and experience to a squad that needs stability at the back.
