Rabat — Olympique de Marseille has confirmed that defender Nayef Aguerd has undergone surgery to treat a persistent groin injury, confirming the procedure was successful. The Moroccan international had been dealing with pain for several months before deciding to proceed with the operation.
The surgery was carried out to address a pubalgia-related injury that had continued to trouble the center-back despite several medical treatments in recent months. Club staff and specialists ultimately determined yesterday that surgery was the only viable solution.
While the operation went well, Marseille have not yet provided a clear timetable for his return, with the player now beginning a period of rest and rehabilitation.
However, it is formally ruled out that Nayef Aguerd will participate in Morocco’s friendlies at the end of March 2026. His surgery’s estimated recovery period is four to six weeks. Since the national team matches take place less than three weeks after his operation, his absence is undeniable. He will miss the two scheduled games against Ecuador (March 27) and Paraguay (March 31).

Speaking after the procedure in a message shared on Instagram, Aguerd explained the extent of the pain he had been experiencing throughout the season.“Since October, I have been suffering from pain that had become a part of my daily life. From waking up until going to bed, and sometimes even during the night, it had become permanent. Despite all the medical protocols implemented in recent months, it was unfortunately no longer enough. The operation therefore became unavoidable.”
The defender also expressed his gratitude to the medical professionals who oversaw the surgery and treatment process and to OM. Aguerd then admitted the decision to undergo surgery had been delayed as he attempted to keep playing while searching for other solutions.“This decision should have been made a while ago, but I wanted to continue and find the best possible solutions before resorting to this.”
The Moroccan center-back is now focused on recovery and hopes to return in time to contribute during the decisive phase of the season. “Now it’s time for rest and recovery. I hope to be ready in time to help Olympique de Marseille during the final sprint of the season, this time at 100%, without pain.”
He ended the message by thanking teammates from both club and country who supported him during the difficult period. “I also thank my teammates on the national team and at OM, who have seen me suffer in recent months and who have supported me a lot.”
For Marseille, the focus will now be on managing the defender’s rehabilitation carefully as the team approaches the final stretch of the campaign.
