Marrakech – GITEX Africa 2026 opened today in Marrakech, welcoming over 50,000 participants for three full days of networking, pitching and opportunities. As the tech expo is a flagship event under the Ministry of Digital Transition, Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni spoke at the opening ceremony, saying that Morocco is reinforcing its position as a major player in global digital transformation, using technology to support sovereignty and sustainable development.

El Fallah Seghrouchni also asserted the importance of the event by describing it as a key hub shaping Africa’s digital future and influencing global tech dynamics.

Morocco is undergoing a shift from vision to action in building a new model of digital sovereignty, adapting to rapid global technological and geopolitical changes. “Today, Morocco is making a technological bet to serve a new model of sovereignty” she said.

The minister added that instead of competing directly with global powers, Morocco aims to create its unique model which she described as a “third way.”  “Morocco can incorporate a third way in digital technology and artificial intelligence.”

The model rests on four fundamental pillars. These include practical technological sovereignty geared towards serving the public interest, authentic modernity that respects national specificities, balanced technological strength linking Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic, and a pivotal role in promoting international dialogue on issues of digitalization and artificial intelligence.

El Fallah Seghrouchni explained that by leveraging its strategic location, diverse partnerships, and active participation in multilateral dialogues, Morocco is well-positioned to serve as an international hub for discussions on ethical artificial intelligence, promoting a balance between innovation, sovereignty, and responsibility.
