Rabat – Kenya has renewed its newfound position in support of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only credible and realistic solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

Kenya reiterated its position during the first session of the Morocco-Kenya Joint Commission, which Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita co-chaired in Nairobi alongside Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Musalia Mudavadi.

In a joint communique, the two countries adopted, Kenya reaffirmed its position, recognizing Morocco’s initiative as a “sustainable approach” to resolving the regional dispute over Western Sahara.

Nairobi also expressed its intention to “cooperate with like-minded states to promote its implementation,” commending the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 of October 2025.

The resolution recognized Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a genuine political solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

This marks  another milestone as the country’s proposal receives support from over 120 countries in the international community.

Kenya also reaffirmed its support for the UN-led political process, UN Secretary General and his personal envoy to facilitate negotiations based on Morocco’s utonomy Plan.

Morocco welcomed Kenya’s support for the UN-led process, serving as the exclusive mechanism for achieving a sustainable political solution to the Sahara dispute.

It also expressed appreciation for Kenya’s recognition of Morocco’s cooperation within the UN-led political process.

In May last year, Kenya officially declared Morocco’s initiative as the “only sustainable approach” to resolve the dispute.

“The Republic of Kenya considers the autonomy plan as the only sustainable approach for resolving the Sahara issue and intends to cooperate with like-minded states to promote its implementation,” the country said in a statement.

The countries also welcomed the growing international consensus and momentum led by King Mohammed VI in favor of the autonomy initiative.
