Rabat – Real Madrid’s Raúl Asencio was taken to the hospital recently after his stomach illness took a turn for the worse. The young defender was unable to travel to Munich last Tuesday after spending several days vomiting.

According to Marca, the situation is serious, as Asencio has already lost six kilograms. Doctors are now running tests to monitor his condition and help him regain the strength he needs to return to the pitch.

The 23-year-old missed last Tuesday’s game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final second leg after suddenly falling sick. He was forced to leave training early and could not join the team’s trip because of what the club called a stomach bug.

Since then, his condition has worsened. Because he was not improving at home, the club decided to send him to the hospital for further medical tests to find out exactly what was wrong.

Real Madrid announced the center-back’s medical report on Saturday. “After the tests carried out on our player Raúl Asencio by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with bacterial enterocolitis.”

“Asencio is at home under treatment. His condition will be monitored for further developments,” the club added.

According to Cope, the Canary Islander will miss this Tuesday’s home game against Alavés at the Santiago Bernabéu. However, he is hoping to recover in time for the next match, when Real Madrid travels to face Betis at the La Cartuja stadium on April 24.

This is the fourth time this season that Asencio has missed games due to illness. In late November, he missed a match against Girona due to a stomach bug. While in December, a fever kept him out of a Copa del Rey game. Most recently, in February, he missed training because of the flu, though he recovered just in time to play against Real Sociedad.

Asencio’s situation is very similar to what Kylian Mbappé went through during last season’s Club World Cup, as he missed the first three matches of the tournament due to stomach infection which left him extremely weak after losing a significant amount of weight.
