Rabat – Morocco’s judicial police in Casablanca have opened an investigation after the arrest of a suspect from a sub-Saharan country found in possession of more than 7 kilograms of cocaine.

A security source said that the arrest took place on Sunday during a security check at the Mohammed V International Airport.

The woman arrived in Casablanca on a flight from Sierra Leone.

Police placed the suspect in custody amid ongoing investigations to determine the circumstances of the case and local and international ramifications, as well as to identify possible accomplices.

The operation is part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to crack down on drug trafficking.

Last year, Moroccan police handled 106,117 cases related to drug trafficking, arresting 134,126 suspects involved.

The number includes 378 foreigners.

The police seized 170 tons and 796 kilograms of cannabis resin and derivatives during different operations throughout the year.

Security services also seized one ton and 731 kilograms, and 558 grams of cocaine, as well as nearly a kilogram of heroin.
