Agadir – Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Minister Nasser Bourita and Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Vienna.

The agreement establishes a structured strategic dialogue between the two countries to advance friendly relations and expand cooperation across key sectors, particularly in the political and economic spheres.

“Through this MoU on strategic dialogue, Morocco and Austria reaffirm their belief that consultations and the exchange of information on bilateral, regional, and international issues of common interest will contribute to deepening understanding between the two countries,” Morocco’s Foreign Ministry said.

The agreement builds on a long-standing diplomatic relationship. Morocco and Austria marked the 240th anniversary of their diplomatic ties on February 28, 2023.

“Based on the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the text underscores the central nature of the historic and privileged partnership between Morocco and Austria, which celebrated the 240th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations on February 28, 2023,” the ministry said.

Austria expressed support for Morocco’s efforts to promote a renewed model of south-south cooperation as one of Africa’s diplomatic leaders, signaling fostering cooperation involving Austria, Morocco, and partner countries across the African continent.

Both countries further emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening dialogue and partnerships between the European Union and its southern neighbors, particularly within the broader Euro-African framework.

Bourita’s visit was also marked by Austria expressing support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which backs the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to advance negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy plan, with the aim of reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution.

Austria also acknowledged Morocco’s readiness to further clarify the implementation of autonomy under its sovereignty.

This position aligns with a broader international dynamic supporting Morocco’s stance, reinforced by the adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, and reflects growing diplomatic momentum in favor of the autonomy plan.
