Fez – European regulators are preparing new measures that could force Google to change how its Android system operates, in a move that may reshape competition in artificial intelligence across mobile devices.
According to Al Arabiya, the initiative is being examined by the European Commission under the framework of the Digital Markets Act, which classifies Android as a “gatekeeper” platform.
This designation requires major technology companies to provide fair access to their systems for competing services.
At the center of the discussions are three key areas.
Regulators want third-party AI tools to be accessible through voice commands, to integrate more deeply with mobile applications, and to perform tasks on behalf of users with direct access to device resources.
These capabilities are currently seen as limited, with some features closely tied to Google’s own services, including its AI assistant Gemini and tools such as Circle to Search.
European authorities are also reviewing the “Hey Google” voice activation feature. The goal is to allow rival developers to create alternative voice assistants that can operate at a similar system level.
In parallel, concerns have been raised over access to on-device data through systems like AppSearch, which regulators argue remain largely restricted to Google’s ecosystem.
Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has pushed back against the proposed changes.
The company warned that opening deeper system access could create security risks, weaken user privacy protections, and increase technical costs.
It also argued that broader access could fragment the user experience across Android devices.
The dispute reflects a broader pattern in Europe’s regulatory approach to large technology firms.
Similar pressure has previously been applied to Apple Inc., particularly over restrictions on access to near-field communication (NFC) technology, which the company later expanded to third-party developers.
The latest developments point to a growing tension between regulatory oversight and technological control.
As artificial intelligence becomes more central to mobile ecosystems, the outcome of this debate could redefine how open or closed major operating systems will be in the years ahead.
