Rabat – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres met on Monday with Omar Hilale, Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations and Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission, to discuss peacebuilding efforts led by Morocco at the United Nations.
During the meeting, Hilale briefed Guterres on Morocco’s leadership of the commission and shared updates on recent efforts to support peace on the ground. He noted the positive impact of the commission’s work in several countries, especially in Africa.
Hilale pointed in particular to concrete results in the Central African Republic, where he has closely followed progress over the years. He stated that lasting peace requires strong, continuous involvement by the United Nations.
He also noted the importance of funding and developing projects, as well as the role of international financial institutions in helping countries recover from crises. There is no development without peace, and no peace without development, the ambassador said.
Hilale added that the Peacebuilding Commission is working to expand partnerships. He noted recent meetings with World Bank officials and called for greater support for on-the-ground projects.
The Moroccan ambassador invited Guterres to attend two upcoming high-level events under Morocco’s presidency. The first will take place on June 22 during the commission’s annual session, focusing on “Partnerships for Peacebuilding.” It will also mark the first International Peacebuilding Week and the 20th anniversary of the commission.
The second event, at the ministerial level, will take place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. It will be chaired by Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Guterres thanked Hilale for the invitations and described both events as a priority for the UN agenda. He commended Morocco’s strong commitment to peacebuilding and its leadership role, especially in the Central African Republic.
He also noted that the Peacebuilding Commission enjoys broad support from UN member states due to its clear impact on the ground. He said the commission has played a key role in improving conditions in African countries affected by crises, pointing to progress in development, health, agriculture, finance, and governance.
At the end of the meeting, Guterres asked Hilale to convey his “highest respect” to King Mohammed VI.
