Rabat – Police and customs services teamed up today to foil a drug trafficking attempt on Friday morning, seizing 570 kilograms of cannabis.

A statement from the police said the drugs were concealed inside a truck used for international transport with Moroccan license plates.

Investigations resulted in the arrest of the truck driver, who is a 45-year-old Moroccan national.

The police placed the suspect in custody to determine the circumstances of the case and identify all individuals involved.

The investigation also aims to determine any potential national and international links to the criminal activity, the statement concluded.

Morocco has been vowing to intensify efforts against drug trafficking, among other transnational crimes.

Moroccan police handled 106,117 cases related to drug trafficking, arresting 134,126 suspects, including 378 foreigners, last year.

Police also seized 170 tons and 796 kilograms of cannabis resin and derivatives during different operations in 2025, as well as 1 ton, 731 kilograms, and 558 grams of cocaine.

In its annual report last year, Moroccan police said violent crime fell by 10% as authorities expanded digital services and strengthened international cooperation.

Throughout 2026, Moroccan police carried out several similar operations, arresting suspects involved in drug trafficking and seizing large quantities of drugs.

One of the recent operations was in April, when police thwarted an international trafficking attempt in Oujda.

During the operation, police seized 700 kilograms of cannabis as well as jewelry and a significant amount of money.

In March, Moroccan police, in coordination with customs authorities, seized a total of 3.9 tonnes of cannabis at Tanger Med Port.

Police said the operation foiled an attempt at international drug trafficking targeting a semi-trailer truck transporting goods internationally.
