Rabat – With the 2026 FIFA World Cup only a month away, Moroccan goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi made his long‑awaited return to the pitch on Sunday, May 10.
He started for RS Berkane in their 1-0 win over CODM Meknes in the Botola Pro, marking his first appearance in four months.
Mohamedi had been sidelined since suffering a dislocated right shoulder while training with the national team in January.
The injury occurred just two days before Morocco’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Senegal, a match the Atlas Lions were later awarded by forfeit.
He underwent surgery in Spain on January 24 and has been recovering ever since.
Sunday’s match was his first start for Berkane since December, when he featured in the CAF Champions League group stage against Rivers United.
His return comes at a crucial moment, as Morocco prepare for their World Cup campaign in June.
Mohamedi, who represented Morocco at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, hopes to earn a place in Mohamed Ouahbi’s squad for the upcoming tournament, making his third appearance in the competition.
His experience and leadership could prove valuable, but the battle for the goalkeeper position is intense this season.
AS FAR’s Ahmed Tagnaouti has been outstanding, helping his club reach the CAF Champions League final while maintaining strong form in the Botola.
Meanwhile, El Mehdi Al Harrar of Raja Casablanca has been one of the league’s standout performers, keeping multiple clean sheets as his team fights for the domestic title.
Mohamedi will aim to build momentum with Berkane in the final weeks of the season, hoping his performances convince Ouahbi that he deserves another World Cup call‑up.
Despite the tough competition, his return to full fitness gives him a chance to rejoin the Atlas Lions on football’s biggest stage.
