Fez – Morocco’s fuel reserves remain at stable levels despite renewed tensions in global energy markets, according to Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali, the country currently holds enough diesel supplies to cover 48 days of national demand.
Speaking before the House of Councillors on Tuesday, Benali said gasoline reserves also remain above 40 days of consumption, as authorities continue efforts to secure the country’s energy supply ahead of the summer season.
The minister said Morocco has faced several international energy disruptions since 2021 and has responded by strengthening coordination between public institutions and private operators while accelerating major infrastructure projects linked to fuel storage and supply chains.
Her remarks come at a time of growing uncertainty in global oil markets, particularly following tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
Moroccan authorities are now pushing operators to speed up strategic projects before seasonal fuel demand increases during the summer months.
Every year, millions of Moroccans living abroad return home during the summer period, leading to a significant rise in fuel consumption and transport activity across the country.
Benali said the government’s priority remains ensuring energy security while reducing the impact of international market volatility on inflation and household spending.
However, opposition lawmakers and labour union representatives questioned the government’s handling of fuel prices, arguing that Moroccan consumers continue to carry the burden of rising costs.
Several parliamentarians called for more transparency in the fuel sector, particularly regarding profit margins, taxation and distribution expenses.
Representatives from labour groups also renewed criticism of fuel distributors, accusing some companies of making excessive profits while prices remain high for consumers.
They urged the government to reconsider fuel price regulation measures to ease pressure on purchasing power.
