Rabat – A new report has placed Morocco among Africa’s leaders in terms of electric vehicle (EV) sales.
Energy-focused website Attaqa cited the new report, which shows Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa emerging as the continent’s leading EV markets.
Egypt topped continental sales with nearly 7,900 electric vehicles last year. Morocco comes second with around 5,500 units, while South Africa recorded approximately 3,800 vehicles.
The report, reviewed by the Attaqa team, however, acknowledged that electric vehicle sales in Africa accounted for no more than 0.2% of global sales.
It did, however, increase by around 525% between 2023 and 2025, with the growth remaining concentrated.
Sales across the continent rose from around 4,000 vehicles in 2023 to 25,000 in 2025.
Globally, electric sales rose by 20%, exceeding 20 million cars. Forecasts estimate a further 12% increase in sales this year.
Morocco’s automotive industry is among the best-performing sectors. The North African country has been strengthening its regional and international position through industry.
Morocco now produces over one million cars, with plans to raise capacity to 1.45 million, and eventually two million.
The North African country also pledges to build a full electric vehicle battery value chain to attract investors to produce batteries for more than a million cars.
Last year, Morocco set a target to increase electric vehicle production by 53%, equivalent to 107,000 units.
The industrial sector is booming in Morocco. Earlier this week, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) announced the release of two reports that placed Morocco as Africa’s industrial leader.
The report said Morocco has overtaken South Africa as the continent’s leading industrial economy, attributing the development to Rabat’s sustained industrial upgrading, expert diversification, and strong industrial policy.
