Rabat – French automaker Renault is considering launching electric vehicle production in Morocco, with the future Nador West Med port emerging as a potential site for the new facility.
According to reporting by Africa Intelligence, the plan aligns with the expected opening of the port in 2026, a date recently reaffirmed by Minister of Equipment Nizar Baraka.
Renault Maroc had previously outlined what it described as “a new stage” for its industrial ecosystem from 2021 to 2030, centered on projects that introduce electrification technologies step by step.
The group aims to generate €2.5 billion in local sourcing by 2025, with a long-term target of €3 billion, equivalent to nearly MAD 32 billion, and an 80% local integration rate for its supply chain.
The potential establishment of an electric vehicle plant comes as Morocco draws growing interest from international manufacturers.
Earlier this year, China’s Jinxiu Shanhe signed an agreement with a Moroccan partner to build an assembly plant in the country, signaling broader momentum in the sector.
Renault already operates a major production site in Tangier, which has been manufacturing vehicles since 2012.
The company’s exploration of a second facility dedicated to electric models suggests a strengthening of its presence in Morocco’s automotive landscape, one of the country’s leading export sectors.
