Casablanca — Police and customs officers at Tanger Med Port foiled an attempt to smuggle 17,790 narcotic prescription pills into Morocco on Tuesday, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The pills were discovered during border inspection and control operations carried out on an international transport truck shortly after it arrived on a ferry from a European port.
Authorities said the truck was subjected to routine monitoring and search procedures upon arrival. The inspection led to the seizure of the smuggled narcotic pills and the arrest of the driver, a 44-year-old Moroccan national.
The suspect was placed under judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. Investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case and identify any possible national or international links connected to the suspected criminal activity.
The operation is the latest in a series of drug trafficking cases uncovered at Tanger Med, one of Morocco’s busiest gateways for passenger and commercial traffic with Europe. Just last week, police and customs officers at the port intercepted 1,571 psychotropic pills hidden in a vehicle arriving from a European port and arrested two suspects, including a Spanish national.
Earlier this year, security services at the port also seized nearly four tons of cannabis resin concealed inside an international transport truck as part of a separate anti-smuggling operation.
According to the DGSN, Tuesday’s case forms part of ongoing security operations carried out by Moroccan authorities to combat the international trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances and to dismantle the networks involved in such activities.
