Rabat – Morocco has secured 178 votes out of 187 to win membership on the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027-2029 term.
The vote took place on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York, with the election reflecting Morocco’s continued commitment to multilateralism and dialogue.
ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the UN. The body is in charge of guiding and coordinating the economic, social and cultural activities of the UN.
It also oversees the follow-up and implementation of major UN conferences and summits.
ECOSOC’s key mechanisms include the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) as well as the Humanitarian Affairs Segment (HAS) and the Financing for Development Forum (FfD).
Upon its election, Morocco reiterated the importance of ECOSOC, especially amid the multiple and interconnected challenges.
For Morocco, the UN body is essential in strengthening the coherence of the UN development system and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Morocco said it will continue to participate actively in the work of the council and its subsidiary bodies, including sustainable development, reform of the UN development system, financing for development, and South-South and triangular cooperation.
Morocco has been strengthening its position in several sectors, securing seats among important UN mechanisms given its strategic role in the international community.
Earlier this week, Morocco secured its first seat at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), which will open in September.
The selection came through a lottery conducted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
