Real Madrid announced on Thursday the return of Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, to lead the team for three seasons. The special one returns to manage the Royal Club after a previous spell between 2010 and 2013.
The Portuguese coach is considered one of the most successful managers, his primary task is expected to be getting Real Madrid back on track after two consecutive trophyless seasons.
Mourinho will officially begin his duties on July 13, according to a statement from the capital club.
Mourinho’s history
The Portuguese coach has a history with managing several top clubs, most notably Premier league’s Chelsea and Manchester City, in addition to Serie A’s Inter Milan and Porto. His most recent stint was with Portugal’s Benfica, which began in September 2025.
The Portuguese club had announced earlier in the week that Real Madrid had “officially informed us of their desire to sign Jose Mourinho for 15 million euros,” confirming that the Portuguese coach had given his approval to the deal.
Why Mourinho
Mourinho is considered one of the best coaches in modern football, comes with a resume of two Champions League titles, the first time was obtained in 2004 with Porto in a historic surprise, and the second time was in 2010 with Inter Milan. Various domestic titles were also obtained under the management of the Special One including two Primeira Liga’s titles with Porto, three Premier League’s titles with Chelsea, and two Serie A’s titles with Inter Milan.
During his first spell with Real Madrid, he led the team to win the Copa del Rey in 2011, before winning La Liga title in 2012.
Mourinho’s appointment comes at a time when Real Madrid is looking to reclaim its place as the top club domestically and internationally after two hard consecutive seasons without silverware.
Florentino Pérez, who was re-elected club president last week, had made the Portuguese coach his top priority to overcome the struggles that were facing Los Blancos in the last couple of years.
