Rabat – Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi has reassured fans that goalkeeper Yassine Bounou did not suffer a serious injury during their World Cup draw with Brazil, confirming he is expected to be fit for the upcoming match against Scotland.
The game saw Morocco launch its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a captivating 1-1 draw against Brazil, after Vinícius Júnior quickly answered Ismael Saibari’s brilliant 21st-minute opening goal.
The injury scare occurred in the 84th minute when Bounou collided heavily with Raphinha, sparking widespread worry over the goalkeeper’s fitness until Ouahbi’s update brought relief to Moroccan supporters.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, the Moroccan coach downplayed the injury and expressed optimism about his goalkeeper’s condition.
“It was a minor collision on the shoulder. Right now, we don’t know anything for certain, but when I spoke with him, he assured me he was fine. Tomorrow he will undergo medical tests, and since he finished the match, these are positive signs,” Ouahbi said.
The coach added that the team is taking all necessary precautions while remaining confident about the goalkeeper’s availability.
Looking ahead to the next group stage fixture, Ouahbi added: “Right now, I can’t say more, and tomorrow we will know the results after the medical tests. But, thank God, the injury doesn’t look serious, and I am sure he will be ready for the next match.”
Following their hard-fought draw against Brazil, the Atlas Lions will face Scotland on June 19 in Boston before wrapping up their Group C campaign against Haiti on June 24 in Atlanta, aiming to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.
