Rabat– Morocco’s national electricity production declined slightly during the first four months of 2026 according to the latest report from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF).
The DEPF said national electricity output fell by 0.3% year-on-year through the end of April, reflecting contrasting trends across different segments of the sector.
Electricity production by private operators decreased by 1.7%, while output from the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) dropped by 5.7%. In contrast, renewable energy production under Law 13-09 recorded a significant increase of 20.7%.
Production by national third-party operators experienced the sharpest rise, soaring by 209.5% over the same period, highlighting the growing contribution of alternative producers to Morocco’s energy mix.
The report also pointed to major shifts in electricity trade with foreign markets. Electricity imports surged by 68.7% at the end of April, reversing a 4.4% decline recorded during the same period last year. Meanwhile, electricity exports fell sharply by 44.2%, following a 14.4% decrease a year earlier.
Despite the slight decline in domestic production, net electricity demand continued to grow, increasing by 4.5% through April 2026, compared to a 5% rise during the same period in 2025.
Electricity consumption also rebounded strongly, rising by 8.4% after contracting by 13.7% a year earlier.
The figures come as Morocco continues to accelerate its energy transition strategy and expand the role of renewable energy in its national electricity system.
In parallel, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development is moving to establish a national system to certify and track renewable electricity consumption. The initiative is designed to improve the traceability of green electricity and help Moroccan exporters comply with increasingly stringent environmental requirements in key markets, particularly the European Union.
The ministry has already received 15 applications from Moroccan and international companies interested in developing a national registry for guarantees of origin for renewable electricity, underscoring growing interest in Morocco’s expanding green energy sector.
