World Cup 2026: Germany’s Real Test Is Yet to Come After Ecuador Defeat

Rabat – Germany suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador on Thursday at 9 p.m. (GMT+1) at the New York New Jersey stadium. Despite the loss, Julian Nagelsmann’s side finished top of Group G with six points, while Ecuador advanced as runners-up with five.

Germany’s head coach Nagelsmann, admitted after the match that his team lost control after going ahead and had trouble dealing with the space behind them after Leroy Sané’s early goal. 

“When you have such a good start to a game and you take the lead, you have to focus on the spaces. Today we lost control a little bit after we took the lead,” Germany’s coach said.

His words reflected a performance in which Germany never regained its rhythm after Ecuador’s equalizer goal, allowing the Ecuador players to possess most of the match.

Germany struggled even more during the second half. After believing for a few seconds that they had earned a penalty shoot, only for the referee to refuse it because of a foul in the buildup, Nagelsmann’s side lost their foothold as Ecuador started pressing even more. 

The Ecuador team were rewarded in the second half when Gonzalo Plata scored their second goal in the 77th minute, punishing Germany for their recklessness. 

According to GOAL, the post-match player ratings reflected Germany’s struggles, with Manuel Neuer 5/10, Antonio Rüdiger 6/10, and Kai Havertz 5/10. They were all ranked among the match’s lowest performers after disappointing displays. Neuer was unable to prevent either goal, Rüdiger looked shaky in possession, and Havertz failed to make an impact despite leading the line and struggling to get involved in Germany’s attacking play.

Although Germany achieved their objective of topping Group E, the defeat has completely changed the media conversation surrounding their World Cup journey. Rather than entering the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s most convincing contenders, Germany now is facing growing questions over whether they can overcome elite opponents if the same defensive lapses and lack of midfield control continue. 

With every match now carrying knockout consequences, Nagelsmann’s side must quickly prove that the loss to Ecuador was an isolated setback rather than a warning sign of what lies ahead.
