Casablanca – The Royal Moroccan Basketball Federation presented its roadmap for the future of the sport during a communication meeting held Friday in Salé, outlining a series of reforms aimed at improving governance, expanding youth development, and raising Morocco’s profile on the continental and international stage.
Federation president Idriss Chraibi said the new executive board has spent its first six months carrying out a thorough assessment of Moroccan basketball. The period also included consultations with clubs and other stakeholders across the sport to identify priorities for the coming years.
According to Chraibi, the discussions focused on key issues including the national technical department, the allocation of the government grant, a new training strategy, expanding the player base, and giving greater attention to youth categories.
Secretary General Abdelraouf Ben Taleb said the federation’s first priority was ensuring the continuity of the national championship and protecting athletes so competitions could continue without disruption. He added that the 2026-2027 season will serve as a transition year before the launch of a professional league based on stronger management and closer coordination with clubs, coaches, referees, and technical specialists.

He also said the federation wants to build a new generation of national teams by combining locally developed players with Moroccan talent based abroad.
New national technical director Ricardo Casas of Spain said he has completed an assessment of women’s basketball, school basketball, and the national team structure to better understand the current technical level. He said coach education will be at the center of his project, calling it the main factor that determines the quality of players and the overall standard of the game.
Moroccan basketball has a long history, with clubs such as AS Salé, FUS Rabat and MAS Fez regularly competing for domestic titles and representing the country in African competitions.
Earlier this month, MAS Fez won the 2025-2026 Throne Cup after defeating FUS Rabat in the men’s final, while KACM claimed the women’s title. The domestic championship is also entering its decisive playoff stage with MAS Fez, FUS Rabat, AS Salé and Ittihad Tangier reaching the semifinals.
Morocco’s under-18 men’s and women’s national teams prepare to begin the Arab Championship in Tunisia. The men’s team will compete in Sfax alongside hosts Tunisia, Bahrain, Algeria, Libya, and Egypt, while the women’s side has been drawn with Tunisia and Algeria. Both squads recently completed a training camp in Marrakech to improve their physical and technical preparation ahead of the tournament.
