Rabat – Morocco’s weather authority has issued a new alert as unstable conditions and extreme heat affect large parts of the country.
The Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) announced today that several provinces will experience thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts, alongside a significant rise in temperatures.
According to the forecast, stormy showers with rainfall levels between 20 and 30 mm are expected on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the provinces of Boulemane, Midelt, and Figuig. These conditions may bring sudden downpours, reduced visibility, and localized disruptions.
At the same time, a heatwave has settled over a wide stretch of the country. Temperatures ranging between 38°C and 40°C are expected on Sunday in Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Khouribga, Errachidia, Taroudant, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Settat, Kelaat Sraghna, Marrakech, Rehamna, Figuig, Jerada, Youssoufia, Khenifra, and Taounate.
Even higher temperatures, between 40°C and 44°C, are forecast in Zagora, Tata, Es-Semara, Assa-Zag, Aousserd, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Tinghir.
The heatwave is expected to persist into the early part of the week. From Monday through Wednesday, temperatures between 40°C and 43°C will affect provinces including Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Khenifra, Fez, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate, Ouezzane, Khouribga, Sidi Bennour, Essaouira, Khemisset, Meknes, Safi, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, and Inzegane-Ait Melloul.
Meanwhile, more intense heat, with temperatures reaching between 42°C and 45°C, is forecast during the same period in Kelaat Sraghna, Rehamna, Youssoufia, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Tata, Taroudant, Aousserd, Settat, Chichaoua, Marrakech, Zagora, and Errachidia.
The weather authority urges residents in affected areas to remain cautious, particularly during peak afternoon hours, and to take necessary precautions against both storm-related hazards and extreme heat.
