Rabat – Morocco made World Cup history during their Round of 32 clash against the Netherlands by completing 801 passes, according to Opta.

The Atlas Lions became only the second team, after Spain, to complete more than 800 passes in a single FIFA World Cup match since Opta started collecting this data.

The achievement is even more remarkable because it came against the Netherlands, a team famous for its “Total Football” philosophy. Dutch football has long been known for controlling possession, fluid movement, and attacking play.

What is ‘Total Football’?

To understand why Morocco’s 801 passes are historic, you have to look at their opponent. The Netherlands invented “Total Football” in the 1970s. Coach Rinus Michels created this famous style, with star player Johan Cruyff leading the way. For decades, it was the ultimate way to control a football match.

The main idea of “Total Football” is simple. A team uses high ball possession as a weapon. Players do not stay in rigid positions. Instead, they constantly switch places on the pitch to confuse the opponent. At the same time, they form triangles and diamonds around the ball. They pass quickly using one or two touches. This forces the other team to chase the ball until they get tired and leave open spaces.

In this match, the Atlas Lions turned the tables on the Dutch. Morocco used the Netherlands’ own famous strategy against them. By completing 801 passes, Mohamed Ouahbi’s team kept the ball and controlled the tempo. They stayed calm, moved into open spaces, and starved the Dutch team of possession. It was a brilliant tactical performance that showed Morocco can now outplay the world’s best teams at their own game.

Tactical brilliance

Morocco’s performance reflected the team’s growing confidence and tactical maturity under head coach Ouahbi, who has shown remarkable talent in tactics and managing the game since day one of this World Cup. The passing record was another sign of how far the national team has developed on the world stage.

The Atlas Lions eventually secured qualification to the Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands on penalties, adding another memorable chapter to Morocco’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey.
