Rabat – Converging reliable reports suggest a three-hour secret crisis meeting at the DFB headquarters ended with a clear message: after Germany’s latest humiliating World Cup exit, Julian Nagelsmann is more than ever facing the end of his job as national coach.
Despite a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador in their final group game, Germany ended up as leaders of Group E courtesy of their 7-1 evisceration of Curacao and the 2-1 defeat of Ivory Coast 2-1. However, they suffered another early elimination in the round of 32, with Paraguay holding them to a 1-1 draw before stunning them in penalty shootouts.
Yet Nagelman suggested he hoped to be given a second chance as coach of the national team.
“I’m not someone who runs away. I’m ready to carry on if the association wants that. Even if there maybe wouldn’t be that many people pleased to see me continue,” he said after the shock defeat to Paraguay.
“If that isn’t what they want, they have to tell me. But the three men involved (Bernd Neuendorf, Rudi Völler and Andreas Rettig) have character and won’t make a snap decision in passing. Everyone knows how I work as a coach and what I stand for. I know how football works. We’ve been producing tournaments like this for some time now. There are a few things that need to change fundamentally.”
But the federation is reportedly planning what post-Nagelsman life should look like for the national team.
Behind the scenes, converging reports have suggested work is already underway on his departure. Most reports indicate the federation is considering a multi-million euro severance package for Nagelman as they seek to replace him with former Dortmund and Liverpool Jürgen Klopp.
