25 Goals, the Unbeaten Record in Morocco’s Botola

Mohamed Boussati has held the record for most goals in a single season since 1982, a record that to date no player has ever broken.

Rabat – As the Botola Pro Inwi nears its end, Soufiane Benjdida leads the scoring charts with 20 goals.

This tally stands out compared to recent seasons, and his performance has brought back memories for Moroccan fans of one of the greatest figures in the league’s history, who still holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season.

That record has remained unbroken for 44 years, and it has sparked debate among Moroccans wondering why the quality of strikers has declined over the years.

Boussati, the star of Kenitra Athletic Club (KAC) and the Moroccan national team during the period of the 70s and 80s, was a nightmare for the biggest goalkeepers in that period, including Zaki, Hazzaz, Raad, and Laalou.

He made his official debut at just 16 years old in a match against Wydad AC.

Boussati quickly established himself as a leading striker. He finished as the league’s top scorer in the 1976-1977 season with 17 goals, a feat he repeated in the 1980-1981 season with the same tally. He then secured his place in Botola history with a record-breaking 25 goals in a single season, surpassing the previous record of 32 goals set by Trafa of SC Chabab Mohammedia during the 1963-1964 season.

Since then, no player has managed to match or surpass this milestone, despite the presence of notable attackers such as Laghrissi, Ahmed Bahja, El Badraoui, Bidodane, Iajour, and Hamdallah.

Abdeslam Laghrissi, former AS FAR player, came closest to breaking the record with 22 goals during the 1989–1990 season. In contrast, some seasons have seen top scorers finish with fewer than 10 goals, as was the case with former Olympique Khouribga (OCK) player Mamadou Kamara in the 2005–2006 season.

“A player must be consistent, disciplined, and have determination; also, the club is not enough; the player has to work individually minimum two times weekly to maintain a better physical condition to perform well on the field,” Boussati said in an interview, offering insight into what it takes to challenge his long-standing record.
