Rabat – Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) has issued a new alert that places several regions on high fire risk between July 6 and July 12, as summer heat and dry conditions increase pressure on forest areas.
The agency based its assessment on a set of predictive models that examine forest density, vegetation type, and weather patterns. These factors, combined with rising temperatures and dry winds, create conditions where a single spark can lead to rapid fire spread.
Twelve provinces face an extreme level of risk this week. These include Berkane, Nador, Taourirt, Guercif, Ifrane, Taounate, Taza, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Essaouira, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, and Taroudant. In these areas, forests remain particularly vulnerable, especially near rural zones and popular summer destinations.
A broader stretch of the country falls under high risk. Authorities point to northern and central provinces such as Chefchaouen, Tangier-Assilah, Tetouan, Larache, as well as Rabat, Sale, and Kenitra. Inland regions, including Beni Mellal, Azilal, and Midelt, also appear on the list.
Other provinces, including Al Hoceima, Meknes, Sefrou, and Khemisset, register a moderate level of concern. While the threat remains lower, officials warn that caution remains necessary given the current climate conditions.
The agency calls on residents near forested areas, as well as summer visitors, to remain alert. Simple actions such as leaving waste behind, lighting fires, or careless handling of flammable materials can trigger serious incidents.
Authorities also urge the public to report any sign of smoke or unusual activity without delay. Early alerts often make the difference between a contained incident and a large-scale fire.
With the summer season at its peak, officials stress that prevention remains the most effective line of defense.
